LaMiLo represented at annual conference

30 June 2013 INTERREG NWE annual conference

Once again, this month LaMiLo was represented at the annual Interreg IVB North West Europe (NWE) conference which was held at the recently opened Velodrome in Roubaix, north of Lille. The conference welcomed over 500 delegates including representatives from the LaMiLo partner, Tudor, along with the Institute for Sustainability, and provided the opportunity to present both the LaMiLo and Weastflows projects.

These events aim to bring together organisations involved in projects funded by the EU Inter-regional (INTERREG) initiative, to share experiences and promote mutual opportunities and learning.

The conference highlighted many important achievements from the programme, where 64 percent of project investment is in infrastructure, covering 40 percent of the EU’s population, resulting in an inherent focus on urbanisation issues.

Highlights of the conference included round table discussions on new projects and innovative ideas in transport and logistics, such as low carbon logistics and city systems freight distribution. There was substantial interest in the LaMiLo and Weastflows projects, and this provided an opportunity to discuss generation of new project ideas focusing on transnational geographies, with existing and new partners.

INTERREG NWE annual conference The ‘low carbon logistics workshop delivered many potential collaborative prospects, and identification of future key areas to focus a European low carbon logistics interest group. This included considering how technical infrastructure in city systems and rural areas effect behavioural change on a large-scale, and sharing of innovative practices such as bringing parallel universes of planning together, and providing a platform for collaboration.

An outcome of the conference was to debate possible future program content, focusing on innovation and implementation of regional energy strategies, adaptation and mitigation of climate change, coordination between transport in city systems, cross-border cooperation and multi-modality in the transport sector.

The conference provided an excellent opportunity for programme partners to discuss the future of NWE projects, and innovative directions for future challenges. These next steps will be discussed and presented at the LaMiLo and Weastflows partnership meetings.
